Based on a 1992 BMW R100R
It's always a pleasure being asked to build a themed bike for a company especially as it's a local one, which means we get to see it fairly regularly at bike meets and rides like the DGR. Precision Hydration work with and supply elite athletes energy gels and drinks to keep them hydrated correctly during their races. Extreme marathon runners, Tour De France cyclists, Triathletes, swimmers and even top Superbike riders such as Scott Redding, Christian Iddon and James Hillier are on their books.
They have an impressive laboratory set up at their Christchurch headquarters that an athlete can be rigorously tested in controlled conditions (heat, speed etc) and can calculate their fluid loss and then precisely tailor the type and amount of hydration required for their races. No more guessing!
A BMW R100R Paralever was chosen for the build, a classic Airhead but with the best suspension set up and the last incarnation of its type. Lots of upgrades were on the spec list along with themed paintwork and colours.
As we already had a good donor bike in stock we could get it on the bench and crack on. The style of this build was to be a street scrambler but with more emphasis on street, so a set of modern R1200R 17"spoked wheels were sourced, refurbished and adapted to fit. Wide Dunlop Mutant's were the choice of rubber and fit the build perfectly.
After the motor and transmission were refreshed and treated to a satin black finish, the attention turned to the chassis. To create the stance required, the front forks were refreshed and shortened. The rear monoshock, which was a quality, fully adjustable after market unit was stripped, Ceracoated black and the spring powder coated orange to match one of the company's colours. A stepped dual seat subframe was sourced and powder coated in satin black along with the frame and swinging arm before being treated to new bearings. Glenn Moger, our upholsterer, did a great job of covering the bespoke alloy seat pan in 'New Delhi' brown leather and adorning it with the bikes name and finished in some of the company's colours.
Custom alloy mudguards were made and an earlier Mono fuel tank (which looks better) was modified to fit.
A full custom low slung stainless exhaust was made to our spec by our pals at Armours in Bournemouth and then Ceracoated black. Sounds great too!
We've fitted FCR Flatslide carbs to some of our Guzzi builds with great results so we were curious to know how they worked on a BM. Well, they worked great straight out of the box with perfect fueling all the way through the range. Definitely an improvement over the old Bings.
The new Renthal Fat Bars were adorned with Accassato's superb radial pump mastercylinder and matching clutch perch which both have adjustable folding levers. The mastercylinder bore size was matched to the bigger Brembo calipers and discs and at the lever it gives a really strong,consistant feel. Venhill stainless hoses finished in black complete the brake package.
A full suite of electronic upgrades were fitted including Motgadget M Unit Blue, momentary push button switches, full LED lighting with micro three in one tail/stop and indicators, keyless ignition, Acewell speedo/tacho unit, one of our under transmission battery boxes fitted with a high power Antigravity L.I battery and all mated up with a custom made wiriing loom.
Time was getting tight for the build to be completed in time for the DGR ride which our client wanted to participate in but luckily our pals at Wicked Coatings pulled out all the stops and got the gorgeous paintwork finished within the deadline and boy, does it look good. With the DGR completed (with a big smile on Andys face ), he took it to the annual BMW Airheads gathering at Sammy Millers Museum and came away with the Best Custom award. Happy days!
