Based on a '90 Moto Guzzi SP1000 3
Right from the outset of this project, it was clear that our client, Tony, wanted top quality components and plenty of bling. That was music to our ears and couldn't wait to get started.
We already had the donor bike which although was cosmetically challenged, had all the good upgrades that the later Tonti framed Guzzi's get and was mechanically very good.
Once the bike was stripped, the frame, wheels, new, gorgeous alloy tank, seat and alloy front mudguard were sent off to our paint pals at Wicked Coatings to create their magic.
The satin gold is a 'Marchesini' shade and the red is a Ferrari colour with a subtle metalflake in the lacquer for that sparkle in the sun. To top off the new single seat is some beautiful upholstery by Glenn Moger in black leather with Tricolore diamond stitching just to give a nod to the bikes Italian birth place.
While that lot were away, the motor was stripped for inspection and refreshed with upgrades including a RAM single plate clutch and lightweight balanced flywheel which gives a really light lever action and spins the motor up quicker for a better response.
Also fitted were a deeper sump with external oil filter, Timing chain kit with upgraded tensioner, refreshed heads, new piston rings and stainless braided oil lines.
Once all the mechanical were done, the motor and transmission were treated to a satin black finish with highlighted fins and edges and all stainless fasteners.
Handling and braking were high on the list for upgrading so the forks were refreshed and a new set of racing spec, slightly longer, custom made fully adjustable Maxton shocks were fitted.
The original Brembo twin pot calipers were junked in favour of a set of four pot Brembo's modified to fit and a new pair of floating discs bolted on.
Our 'go to' CNC machinist,Rob, was called upon again to make a new billet alloy top yoke which had to incorporate new 'fat bar' clamps, a new stainless top nut with integral start button and mountings for the new Acewell speedo. Once made it was clear anodized to protect it from the elements. He also CNC'd a lovely new fork brace / mudguard bracket which prevents fork twist and gives it a great custom look.
Since all the original electrics including the loom were binned, a new bespoke loom was made to mate up with all the new high tech electronics housed in a custom tray under the seat which include a Motogadget M-unit controller, M-button,keyless ignition, push button switches, LED bar end indicators, Koso Thunderbolt LED headlamp and multi function Highsider rear LED lights (indicators, tail and stop light ) which were set into the end of the frame rails.
The original ignition system with old distributor was replaced with a state of the art Sachse digital, programmable system and combined with the new Dyna coils now give a big fat spark with reliability.
With the Delorto carbs fully overhauled and fitted with flip up chokes and spun alloy bellmouths it now breathes better and combined with the brushed stainless 'Le Mans' exhaust system from OS Pipes it sounds great too.
If you live around the Brands Hatch area of Kent, you may see "SkyFin" thundering along with Tony at the helm enjoying the experience.
